Farm Animal Attendant Equine Science Program POSITION: One, full-time position at $20.00/hr. working 40 hours a week. Hours and days of work can vary as determined by the supervisor. This is a full-time position with a start date of November 7, 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. RESPONSIBILITIES: Operation, maintenance and record keeping functions related primarily to the care of horses; plans and assigns work, instructs in proper work methods and care of horses; reviews work by daily inspection of animal areas and task assignments; prepares and provides animal feed; keeps feeding records; observes and cares for animals during pregnancy, and foaling; keeps breeding, health, birth and disposal records; monitors/inspects daily health and condition of farm animals; assists veterinarian in treatment of injuries of ailments; provides treatment as prescribed by veterinarian or supervisor; monitors/controls pests and parasites; cleans and maintains sanitation of barns, pens, working facilities, water tanks and other animal facilities; oils, cleans, and makes minor repairs on equipment, tools and facilities; maintains clean and safe environment for working and learning; equipment operation (skid steer, tractor, truck/trailer); and supervises additional Farm Animal Attendants (FAA), student workers, and work-study within the Equine and Animal Science programs. In addition to the previously noted responsibilities, this FAA will be responsible for the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) records; and will be the keeper, distributor, submitter of Equine Science specific animal use and health records on the University of Minnesota Crookston campus. This FAA will also be responsible for Equine Science faculty, staff, student workers, and work-study IACUC mandated trainings are complete prior to handling the animals. Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) will also be updated as needed and/or requested from IACUC, by this FAA. Equine facilities include a heated 45 stall barn with attached 120' x 90' indoor arena (Charles H. Casey Arena), round pen, tack room, feed room, shavings storage, laboratory space, veterinary exam area, 9 paddocks, and a hay storage shed. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school graduation or equivalent; three years of related experience in animal care (specifically related to horses) or high school graduate with a combination of related academic coursework and applicable work experience totaling three years; ability to occasionally lift up to 75 lbs., ability to work variable hours and days; and ability to read, write, and understand English. Final job offer contingent upon complete background check. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Post secondary education; bachelor's degree in Equine Science or related field; experience working with horses and other farm animals; equipment operation (skid steer, tractor, truck/trailer); and good interpersonal, communication, & team building skills.
